The Tasman Global Access (TGA) Cable is a submarine cable that stretches across the Tasman Sea, connecting New Zealand to Australia. The cable is jointly owned by Vodafone New Zealand, Spark New Zealand, and Telstra.
The TGA Cable is approximately 2,300 kilometers (1,429 miles) long and has a total capacity of 20 terabits per second. It was designed to meet the growing demand for data connectivity between New Zealand and Australia, and to provide a more direct and reliable connection than the existing cables.
Construction of the cable began in early 2016 and was completed in July of that year. The TGA Cable was officially launched in August 2017 and has been in operation since then.
The cable is made up of two fiber pairs, each with a capacity of 10 terabits per second. It has landing stations in Sydney, Australia and Raglan, New Zealand.
The TGA Cable provides a significant improvement in internet connectivity between the two countries and has helped to support the growth of digital economies in both New Zealand and Australia.
