The SEA2SHORE submarine cable is a high-capacity fiber-optic cable that runs from the United States to Puerto Rico. It was built by the Puerto Rico Cable Acquisition Company in 2010 and is owned and operated by Liberty Global. The cable stretches approximately 1,570 kilometers and has a capacity of up to 40 terabits per second.
The SEA2SHORE cable provides critical connectivity between the United States and Puerto Rico, enabling faster, more reliable internet and communication services. It also connects Puerto Rico to other Caribbean islands and the wider world.
The cable was designed to withstand harsh underwater conditions, including saltwater corrosion, extreme temperatures, and pressure changes. It is buried up to 4 meters deep in some areas to protect it from fishing, anchor damage, and other hazards.
In addition to serving as a backbone for high-speed internet services, the SEA2SHORE cable also supports a wide range of applications, including telemedicine, e-commerce, and cloud computing. Its capacity and reliability make it a critical infrastructure asset for both Puerto Rico and the wider region.
