NordBalt is a high voltage submarine cable that runs between Lithuania and Sweden. It was completed in 2015 and is approximately 450 km in length. The cable is designed to transmit electricity between the two countries and has a capacity of 700 MW.
NordBalt is a joint venture between Lithuania's national energy company, Lietuvos Energija, and Sweden's national grid operator, Svenska Kraftnät. The cable is a key part of Lithuania's energy strategy, as it helps to reduce the country's dependence on Russian gas and electricity imports.
The construction of the NordBalt cable involved some innovative engineering solutions, as it had to be laid in deep water and across rugged terrain. The cable was also designed to be able to withstand harsh weather conditions, such as storms and extreme temperatures.
Since its completion, NordBalt has been an important source of energy for both Lithuania and Sweden. It has helped to stabilise electricity prices and improve energy security in the region. NordBalt is also seen as an important step towards greater integration of the Baltic and Nordic energy markets.
