The Kanawa Submarine Cable is a fiber-optic cable that spans approximately 7,400 kilometers and connects the islands of Fiji, Tuvalu, and Kiribati in the South Pacific. The cable was completed in 2018 and is operated by the Fiji-based telecommunications company FINTEL.
The Kanawa cable provides high-speed internet connectivity to the residents of these remote island nations, and also serves as a backup for other submarine cables that connect the region to the rest of the world. The cable has a capacity of up to 20 terabits per second, which is significantly higher than the previous cable that connected these islands.
The project to lay the Kanawa cable was jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, and the Australian government. It is considered to be a significant milestone in the development of telecommunications infrastructure in the South Pacific, and has greatly improved internet connectivity and communication capabilities for the people of Fiji, Tuvalu, and Kiribati.
