High-capacity Undersea Guernsey Optical-fibre (HUGO) Submarine Cable
The High-capacity Undersea Guernsey Optical-fibre (HUGO) submarine cable is a state-of-the-art telecommunication link that enhances connectivity between Guernsey and the global internet infrastructure. This essential infrastructure project is designed to meet the growing demand for high-speed internet and data services, ensuring reliable communication for both residents and businesses on the island.
The cable was officially ready for service on 15th October 2022, marking a significant milestone in the development of Guernsey's digital landscape. HUGO connects Guernsey to multiple international networks, facilitating faster data transmission and improved connectivity.
Cable landing stations for HUGO are strategically located to optimize performance and accessibility. The primary landing station is situated in St. Sampson's, Guernsey, while additional stations extend connectivity to other regions, ensuring that the cable supports a robust telecommunications framework for the island and beyond.
HUGO boasts an impressive total capacity of 200 Terabits per second (Tbps), significantly boosting the bandwidth available to Guernsey. This increased capacity not only enhances the consumer experience with faster internet speeds but also supports local businesses and attracts investment through improved digital infrastructure.
The expected lifespan of the HUGO cable is approximately 25 years, which is standard for submarine cable technologies. This long lifespan ensures that the cable will serve the digital needs of Guernsey for decades, adapting to advancements in technology and increasing data demands over time.
