The Batam Sarawak Internet Cable System (BaSICS) is a significant submarine cable initiative designed to enhance internet connectivity between Indonesia and Malaysia, specifically connecting Batam in Indonesia to Sarawak in Malaysia. This advanced infrastructure aims to bolster the digital communications landscape in the region, enabling faster and more reliable internet services.
The BaSICS submarine cable system is officially ready for service as of August 2021. It features cable landing stations strategically located in Batam, Indonesia, and in Sarawak, Malaysia, ensuring optimal connectivity between the two regions. The system boasts an impressive total capacity of 100 terabits per second (Tbps), which allows for high-speed data transmission and supports the increasing demand for bandwidth in both countries.
The lifespan of the BaSICS cable is projected to be around 25 years, providing a long-term solution for internet infrastructure in the region. This longevity is critical for sustaining the growing digital economy and facilitating advancements in technology.
